In today's rapidly evolving world of work, academic excellence alone is no longer sufficient to guarantee career success. Employers increasingly seek graduates who possess not only technical knowledge but also practical skills, professional networks, adaptability, and a clear understanding of workplace expectations. Recognizing this reality, Kisii University has made career development an integral component of the student experience through its vibrant and dynamic Student Career Services Office.
Since its establishment in 2018 by the then Cabinet Secretary for Education, Ms. Amina Mohamed, the Student Career Services Office has continued to play a pivotal role in preparing students for meaningful careers and productive lives. Through innovative programmes, strategic partnerships, mentorship initiatives, career fairs, mock interviews, apprenticeship engagements, and ambassadorial programmes, the office has become a critical bridge between academic learning and the world of work.
Building Career-Ready Graduates
The primary mandate of the Student Career Services Office is to empower students to make informed career choices while equipping them with the competencies required to thrive in an increasingly competitive job market.
To achieve this objective, the office implements a range of interventions that expose students to industry expectations, emerging employment trends, entrepreneurship opportunities, and professional development experiences. Among the flagship programmes are career fairs, apprenticeship initiatives, job mock interviews, career ambassador programmes, and inter-institutional career exchanges.
These initiatives not only enhance employability but also encourage innovation, leadership, and lifelong learning among students.
Career Fair 2025: Preparing Students for the Future of Work
One of the most impactful activities organized by the Student Career Services Office was the three-day Career Fair held from 24th to 26th September 2025 at the Kisii University Amphitheatre.
Held under the theme “Career Preparation and Innovation for Sustainable Competitive Edge,” the event brought together students, industry leaders, entrepreneurs, human resource professionals, government agencies, and development partners to discuss the future of work and emerging career opportunities.
The fair was officially opened by the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic, Research and Student Affairs, Prof. Fredrick Wanyama, who challenged students to utilize such platforms to broaden their knowledge, build professional networks, and develop the skills necessary for career success.
The event featured a rich programme focusing on soft skills training, mentorship, career experiences, innovation showcases, and entrepreneurship development.
A major highlight was the launch of the Green Careers Caravan by Jacob’s Ladder Africa, a flagship initiative aimed at equipping young people with skills and opportunities within Africa's growing green economy.
Students were inspired by renowned professionals including climate and soil health specialist Dr. Jeremiah Rogito, who shared insights into climate-smart agriculture as a promising career pathway. Green entrepreneurship expert Ms. Gloria Kisilu, Chief Executive Officer of The Shaba, challenged students to embrace innovation and resilience while pursuing entrepreneurial ventures.
The Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA) also educated students on government initiatives such as AGPO, NYOTA, and KJET programmes, highlighting opportunities available for young entrepreneurs and innovators.
Innovation Takes Centre Stage
The second day of the Career Fair showcased Kisii University's growing culture of innovation and creativity.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nathan Ogechi, personally interacted with student innovators and participated in mentorship sessions aimed at nurturing entrepreneurial talent among students.
Seven outstanding student innovations were selected and showcased before industry stakeholders and university leadership.
Among the innovations presented were:
- Aniwise, an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot designed to improve livestock health management for farmers.
- Sentisafe, a mobile application developed to enhance personal safety and provide rapid emergency assistance.
- KSU Clubs App, a digital platform serving as a directory for student clubs and organizations.
- KSU Visitors Management System, an innovative web-based solution for visitor management and appointment scheduling.
- Green Coin Edition, a platform enabling smallholder farmers to earn carbon credits through climate-smart agricultural practices.
- Sparkler, a student-centered social networking platform connecting university students across Kenya.
- Jury Connect (UniConnect Hub), a comprehensive platform integrating academics, career development, and student wellbeing.
These innovations reflected the creativity, problem-solving capacity, and entrepreneurial spirit that Kisii University seeks to cultivate among its learners.
The event concluded with awards recognizing outstanding innovators and reaffirming the University's commitment to fostering a culture of innovation and enterprise.
Strengthening Industry Partnerships Through Apprenticeship Programmes
Career preparation at Kisii University extends beyond campus activities.
In August 2025, the Student Career Services Office organized an inaugural Industry Players Breakfast Meeting aimed at strengthening partnerships between the University and employers.
The event brought together leaders from banking institutions, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, media organizations, and the agricultural sector.
Speaking during the event, Vice Chancellor Prof. Nathan Ogechi emphasized the importance of stronger collaboration between universities and industry in ensuring graduates possess relevant skills and competencies required in the workplace.
The forum provided an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss internship placements, apprenticeship opportunities, mentorship programmes, and future workforce needs.
Representatives from leading organizations shared valuable perspectives on emerging industry trends and the competencies employers seek in graduates.
Participants agreed that closer collaboration between academia and industry is essential in bridging the gap between learning and employment while enhancing graduate employability.
Preparing Students for Success Through Mock Interviews
One of the most practical career development activities undertaken by the Student Career Services Office is the organization of job mock interviews.
In April 2026, the office partnered with Old Mutual Foundation to conduct a comprehensive mock interview programme for final-year students at Dr. Sagini Hall.
The initiative aimed to expose students to real interview environments while helping them assess their readiness for the job market.
Students from different schools participated in simulated interviews conducted by a panel of experienced professionals and career experts.
Participants were evaluated on communication skills, professionalism, preparedness, confidence, and overall presentation.
The exercise revealed several strengths among students, including strong communication abilities, professional appearance, and the ability to respond effectively to technical questions.
However, the sessions also identified areas requiring improvement. Some students struggled with confidence, maintaining eye contact, and providing practical examples during behavioral interviews.
The feedback provided by interviewers enabled participants to identify their strengths and weaknesses while learning practical techniques for improving performance during actual job interviews.
The exercise underscored the importance of preparation, research, and continuous practice in building career readiness.
Taking Career Guidance Beyond Campus
Kisii University's commitment to career development extends beyond its student population.
In January 2026, the University participated in the First National Career Conference and Exhibition organized by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre.
The conference, themed “Informed Career Choices: A Skilled and Competitive Workforce,” brought together universities, technical institutions, professional bodies, employers, students, parents, and career guidance experts.
Representatives from Kisii University's Research and Extension Office and Student Career Services Office engaged prospective students, parents, and stakeholders through career guidance sessions and exhibitions.
The event provided an important platform for showcasing the University's academic programmes, career pathways, research strengths, and student support services.
The team also gained valuable insights into emerging labour market trends and evolving student expectations, information that will help strengthen future career guidance initiatives.
Career Ambassadors: Students Supporting Students
An equally important pillar of the University's career development strategy is the Career Ambassador Programme.
Career ambassadors serve as a vital link between the Student Career Services Office and the wider student community. They help disseminate career information, support mentorship programmes, participate in career outreach activities, and represent the University in inter-institutional engagements.
In a recent training programme attended by 221 student representatives drawn from all schools within the University, ambassadors received orientation on career services, leadership responsibilities, mentorship approaches, and professional development opportunities.
The training emphasized the importance of peer-to-peer support in helping students navigate career choices and access available opportunities.
By empowering student leaders to become career champions, the University has created a sustainable model for extending career guidance services to a larger student population.
A Future-Focused Vision
As labour markets continue to evolve, universities must increasingly equip graduates with skills that go beyond academic qualifications. Kisii University has embraced this challenge by creating a comprehensive career development ecosystem that connects students with industry, nurtures innovation, promotes entrepreneurship, and strengthens professional competencies.
Through career fairs, apprenticeship programmes, mock interviews, career ambassador initiatives, and national career engagements, the Student Career Services Office continues to transform the student experience and prepare graduates for success in a dynamic global economy.
The impact of these initiatives is evident in the growing confidence, employability, and innovation demonstrated by Kisii University students. More importantly, they reflect the University's unwavering commitment to producing graduates who are not only academically competent but also career-ready, adaptable, and capable of making meaningful contributions to society.
As Kisii University looks to the future, the Student Career Services Office remains a critical pillar in shaping the next generation of professionals, entrepreneurs, innovators, and leaders who will drive sustainable development in Kenya and beyond.
