The second semester of the 2025/2026 academic year marked a period of remarkable growth, engagement, and achievement for students at Kisii University. Through a wide range of programmes coordinated by the Department of Student Affairs, the University continued to demonstrate its commitment to nurturing well-rounded graduates by supporting student welfare, leadership development, mental health, sporting excellence, innovation, and community service.

At the heart of these efforts was a strong focus on student welfare and inclusion. Recognizing the financial challenges faced by many learners, the University enrolled 933 needy and deserving students into the Work-Study Programme. This initiative enabled students to earn an income while gaining valuable work experience and contributing to university operations. In addition, financial support from the Rattansi Trust Fund provided relief to vulnerable students, helping many continue their academic journey without interruption.

Beyond financial support, the University created numerous opportunities for personal and professional growth. One of the semester’s highlights was a two-day symposium organized in collaboration with the School of Information Science and Technology. The event exposed students to emerging digital technologies, innovation trends, and career opportunities in the rapidly evolving technology sector. Through interactive discussions and networking opportunities, students gained valuable insights into the skills required to thrive in the digital economy.

The University also strengthened efforts to promote student safety and responsible citizenship. Working closely with local landlords, student leaders, and community stakeholders, consultative meetings were held to help students access safe and affordable accommodation. In partnership with the National Police Service, students participated in a community policing peace walk, environmental conservation activities, and awareness campaigns that fostered positive relationships between students and law enforcement agencies while promoting peaceful coexistence and crime prevention.

Mental health and wellbeing remained a key priority throughout the semester. A series of awareness campaigns brought together students, peer counsellors, mental health professionals, and university administrators to address issues affecting psychological wellbeing. These forums encouraged open conversations about mental health, reduced stigma, and increased awareness of available support services. Additional health education programmes focusing on mental wellness and chronic health conditions empowered students to make informed decisions about their overall wellbeing.

Career development and financial literacy were also given significant attention through the highly successful Comrades Connect Forum. Supported by industry partners, including NCBA Bank, the forum provided mentorship on career planning, entrepreneurship, financial management, and professional networking. Students learned practical financial skills such as budgeting, saving, managing debt, and planning for future financial stability, equipping them with knowledge that extends beyond the classroom.

Student leadership development continued to thrive through specialized training programmes. Student leaders participated in transformational leadership workshops in Nairobi and mediation training at the Wangari Maathai Peace Institute. These experiences enhanced their communication, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills, enabling them to better serve and represent their fellow students.

The Students’ Baraza remained an important platform for participatory governance and dialogue. Through open engagements with university management, students were able to raise concerns, share ideas, and contribute to discussions on academic and welfare matters. The forum strengthened transparency and accountability while fostering a culture of shared responsibility within the University community.

Innovation and experiential learning also featured prominently during the semester. The Agricultural Technology Exhibition provided students with an opportunity to showcase innovative projects, demonstrate practical skills, and engage with industry stakeholders. The event highlighted the role of research and innovation in addressing societal challenges and preparing students for the demands of the modern workforce.

Student clubs and associations continued to excel, recording impressive achievements at regional and national levels. Environmental clubs spearheaded conservation and tree-planting initiatives, while St. John’s Ambulance and Emergency Response Unit earned top honours in competitions. Flamingo Rover Scouts also distinguished themselves through leadership and public health awareness activities. Academic and professional associations organized mentorship programmes, debates, symposiums, and career-focused events that enriched student life and professional development.

The University’s sporting programmes also achieved notable success. Student-athletes excelled in disciplines including basketball, volleyball, athletics, netball, badminton, and cross-country competitions. Several teams qualified for national championships, while outstanding athletes earned opportunities to represent Kenya on international platforms, further elevating the University’s sporting profile.

Complementing these achievements, the Chaplaincy continued to support students’ spiritual growth through worship services, pastoral care, orientation activities, and interdenominational programmes that fostered a strong sense of community and personal development.

As Kisii University reflects on a successful semester, it remains committed to addressing challenges such as limited counselling personnel, inadequate sports facilities, and insufficient meeting spaces for student organizations. Despite these constraints, the achievements recorded between January and April 2026 underscore the University’s unwavering dedication to holistic student development. Through its continued investment in student welfare, leadership, innovation, wellness, and community engagement, Kisii University is shaping graduates who are not only academically accomplished but also socially responsible and prepared to make meaningful contributions to society.
