From Students to Lifesavers: How St. John Ambulance Kisii University Division is Transforming Lives Through Service

When an emergency strikes, there is rarely time to think. A road accident, a sudden collapse in a classroom, or an injury on a sports field can turn ordinary moments into life-threatening situations within seconds. In such moments, survival often depends on the presence of someone who knows what to do. When an emergency strikes, there is rarely time to think. A road accident, a sudden collapse in a classroom, or an injury on a sports field can turn ordinary moments into life-threatening situations within seconds. In such moments, survival often depends on the presence of someone who knows what to do. At Kisii University, that responsibility increasingly rests in the capable hands of members of the St. John Ambulance Kisii University Division, a group of students who have chosen to dedicate their time and energy to learning one of the most valuable skills a person can possess: the ability to save a life.

For 119 members of the division, recent first aid and emergency response training was more than just another extracurricular activity. It was a transformative experience that equipped them with practical skills, strengthened their confidence, and prepared them to respond when others might hesitate. The training brought together students from different academic backgrounds, united by a shared commitment to service. Through intensive sessions covering casualty handling, emergency response procedures, and basic lifesaving techniques, participants learned how to remain calm under pressure and provide assistance when every second matters.

Yet the training offered more than technical knowledge. It cultivated discipline, teamwork, leadership, and a profound sense of responsibility. Every participant left with the understanding that they could one day become the critical link between crisis and survival. For many, the experience marked a transition from being ordinary students to becoming potential first responders within the university community and beyond.

Excellence Tested Under Pressure

The true value of training is often revealed when skills are put to the test. For members of the St. John Ambulance Kisii University Division, that test came through participation in regional and national first aid competitions. During the Nyanza Regional First Aid Competition held in Kisumu, 50 members represented the University. While 14 competed directly in the Link and Adult categories, the remaining members played equally important roles in casualty simulations and emergency scenario management, helping recreate realistic situations that challenged competitors to think and act quickly. Their preparation, teamwork, and commitment yielded remarkable results.

Kisii University emerged as the Best Adult Team Overall, while the Link category secured awards for Best Ambulance Team and Best Nursing Team. By the conclusion of the competition, the division had collected five trophies, a reflection of months of dedication and disciplined training. The regional victory earned the team a place at the National First Aid Competition held in Nairobi on 15th November 2025, where the country's top-performing teams gathered to compete. The national stage brought greater pressure and higher expectations. Yet the Kisii University team remained focused and composed. Moving through complex emergency scenarios with confidence and professionalism, they demonstrated that excellence is not accidental, it is built through preparation, teamwork, and commitment.

Their performance earned them the title of Best Adult Team Overall in Kenya and Position Two Overall nationally in the combined Link and Adult categories. While the trophies symbolized achievement, the deeper significance lay elsewhere. Every skill demonstrated during competition reflected a real-world capability that could one day save a life. Every scenario represented an emergency that could happen in a lecture hall, on a highway, or within a community.

Service Beyond Emergencies

For members of St. John Ambulance Kisii University Division, service extends far beyond first aid competitions and emergency response. On 16th May 2026, the division participated in the Save a Life Walkathon in Kisumu, an event that highlighted another dimension of their mission: compassion. Unlike competitive events, the walkathon was not about rankings or trophies. Instead, it focused on supporting vulnerable members of society, including the sick, orphans, and those facing difficult life circumstances.

As participants walked together through the city, they carried a powerful message of solidarity and hope. Their presence reminded communities that service is not limited to responding to emergencies. It is also about standing with those who need support, raising awareness about important causes, and promoting a culture of care and humanity. The walkathon also served as a platform for increasing public awareness about first aid. Members engaged the public on the importance of basic emergency response skills, emphasizing that anyone can play a role in saving lives during the crucial moments before professional help arrives.

Creating a Culture of Care

The story of St. John Ambulance Kisii University Division is ultimately a story about impact. It is about young people choosing to use their knowledge and skills in service to others. It is about transforming ordinary students into confident leaders, compassionate volunteers, and capable first responders. Their achievements in training, competitions, and community outreach demonstrate that service is not defined by titles or uniforms alone. It is defined by preparedness, commitment, and the willingness to act when others need help most.

As Kisii University continues to nurture graduates who excel both academically and socially, the members of St. John Ambulance stand as powerful examples of what it means to combine knowledge with service. They are more than students. They are ambassadors of compassion, champions of preparedness, and, when circumstances demand it, lifesavers ready to answer the call.
