Building climate-resilient agricultural systems for smallholder farmers in Kisii region.
Kisii University’s Sustainable Agriculture Initiative focuses on climate-resilient agricultural practices and food security for smallholder farming communities in the Kisii region and Lake Victoria basin. By integrating soil health restoration, drought-resilient crops, and community agroforestry, researchers work directly with farmer groups to test and scale sustainable, high-yielding highland agricultural systems.
We combine research, farmer training, demonstration farms and partnerships to test and scale sustainable solutions for real-world impact.
1. Improve food security and nutrition for smallholder farmers.
Diversifying staples with biofortified beans, indigenous vegetables, and drought-hardy sorghum.
2. Promote climate-resilient agricultural practices.
Scaling zero-tillage, organic mulching, minimum-run crop spacing, and rain harvesting terraces.
3. Enhance soil health and biodiversity.
Remediating highland soil acidity with agricultural lime, biochar, and farmyard manure composting.
4. Strengthen farmer capacity and market access.
Linking community cooperatives to certified regional markets, value addition hubs, and micro-credit.
